HPSP supports nutritional and educational programs in orphanages, schools, and temporary shelters throughout Haiti. This yearʼs efforts will continue to focus on helping victims of the earthquake that devastated Port-au-Prince and the surrounding countryside in January of 2010. Pierre Leroy, founder and coordinator of HPSP, is coordinating our teams in Haiti and the Dominican Republic to bring in much needed supplies and help victims in different regions get their lives back together.

We call upon everybody for support. For more information,

EMERGENCY EARTHQUAKE RELIEF

On January 13, 2010, one day after the earthquake HPSP cofounders Pierre and Terry Leroy began working round the clock to coordinate emergency relief to several hundred children. 5 orphanages, which HPSP supports, were either in or within a few miles of the quake's epicenter. For months international aid was bottled up in the Port-au-Prince airport. Our first shipment reached the children on January 23rd. Using our longstanding ties to the Dominican Republic, our brave Haitian university who are studying in the DR crossed the border into Haiti. Traveling under treacherous conditions in large buses packed with life sustaining food, water, medicine and tents, they reached all of our 400 children. The effort was coordinated between three countries - the United States (thanks to all our supporters), the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Despite every obstacle, our buses arrived within three hours of each anticipated arrival time - no small feat. Bravo, to our university students for their leadership and determination.

A Message From Pierre

A few times in our lives we remember exactly what we were doing when a terrible tragedy happens. January 12, 2010 will always be etched in my mind as a time of shock and heartbreak. The world's greatest natural disaster struck my homeland Haiti with a vengeance, killing by some estimates up to 300,000 people and leveling southern Haiti. The response from our supporters, people young and old, from all walks of life, was uplifting. We were able to do much with comparatively little.

Unfortunately as of now, it has been extremely disappointing that so little has been done in the country as a whole. Billions of pledged dollars have not yet been released and many of the large donors continue to withhold monies until they have the so-called perfect plan. This is unacceptable. After the earthquake 1,000,000 Haitians were in tents in and around Port-au-Prince. Today that number has reached 1,600,000. This is deplorable. The Haitian People's Support Project is working to get Haitians out of tents and into homes.

We believe Haiti's future lies in sustainable living projects springing up throughout the country with people in charge of their lives. Decentralization, education, farming, local industry and cooperatives offer the potential for dignity and change.

Please lend a hand, Mete Main, as we help people to help themselves.

In friendship,
Pierre Leroy,
President & Cofounder
